Vibration Meters

Vibration meters measure mechanical vibration to help assess equipment condition, identify changes in performance and support preventive maintenance. They are used to inspect motors, pumps, fans, compressors and other rotating machinery in manufacturing plants, maintenance departments and industrial facilities.

Depending on the model, vibration meters measure acceleration, velocity or displacement. Select an instrument based on the required measurement parameters, frequency range, probe configuration and data recording capabilities to support routine inspections and equipment condition monitoring.

Acceleration, Velocity and Displacement
Vibration can be expressed as acceleration, velocity or displacement. Acceleration measurements are useful for evaluating higher-frequency vibration, while velocity is commonly used to assess overall vibration in rotating machinery. Displacement measures the distance of vibration motion and is often useful for lower-frequency movement. Available parameters vary by model.

Equipment Condition Monitoring
Regular vibration measurements help establish a baseline for equipment operation. Changes over time can indicate developing problems associated with imbalance, misalignment, looseness or bearing wear. Basic vibration readings help identify equipment that needs further investigation, while determining the specific cause may require frequency analysis or additional testing.

Measurement Range and Frequency Response
Choose a meter with a measurement range and frequency response suited to the equipment being inspected. Machine speed, component type and the vibration of interest affect instrument selection. Confirm whether readings are expressed as RMS, peak or peak-to-peak before comparing results.

Probe Mounting and Consistent Readings
Sensor placement and mounting affect measurement repeatability. For meaningful comparisons, take readings at the same location, in the same direction and under similar operating conditions. Magnetic mounts, contact probes and permanently mounted sensors offer different levels of coupling and convenience.

Tracking Results Over Time

Recording measurements during scheduled inspections helps maintenance teams identify trends and prioritize follow-up work. Depending on the model, features may include data hold, maximum reading capture, internal memory or computer connectivity. Evaluate results against equipment manufacturer guidance and applicable vibration criteria.
