AC and DC Current Measurement
AC clamp meters are designed for alternating current measurements in applications such as building wiring, motors and HVAC equipment. AC/DC models also measure direct current, making them useful for battery systems, automotive diagnostics and compatible solar installations. Verify that the selected model supports the current type and range required.

True RMS Measurement
True RMS clamp meters help measure AC current accurately when waveforms are distorted by equipment such as electronic power supplies and variable-speed drives. For drive output measurements, check the meter’s frequency response and whether it provides a dedicated VFD mode or low-pass filter.

Jaw Size and Low-Current Resolution
The jaw opening determines which conductor sizes the meter can accommodate. For low-current testing, measurement resolution is equally important. General-purpose clamp meters may not provide the sensitivity needed for leakage current measurements, which typically require a dedicated leakage clamp meter.

Using a Clamp Meter
For standard load-current measurements, clamp around one conductor at a time. Clamping around both the outgoing and return conductors causes their magnetic fields to cancel, typically producing a reading near zero. Center the conductor within the jaws and ensure the jaws close completely.

Selecting the Appropriate Safety Rating
Match the meter’s CAT rating and voltage rating to the installation and testing location. Also consider lead ratings, available clearance and environmental conditions. Functions such as inrush current capture, data hold, backlit displays and flexible current probes can help with specific service tasks when available on the selected model.
