pH Meters

pH meters measure the acidity or alkalinity of aqueous solutions for water quality testing, food and beverage production, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and laboratory analysis. The conventional pH scale runs from 0 to 14, with values below 7 indicating acidity, values above 7 indicating alkalinity and 7 representing neutrality at 25°C.

Sper Scientific Direct offers pH pens for quick spot checks, portable meters for field measurements, data logging models for recording results and benchtop meters for laboratory use. Choose a meter based on accuracy, calibration options, temperature compensation and electrode compatibility with your samples. Selecting the appropriate electrode is especially important when testing liquids, foods, viscous materials or other challenging samples.

Choosing the Right pH Meter

pH pens offer convenient spot checks for routine testing, while portable meters provide flexibility for fieldwork and measurements at multiple locations. Data logging models help document readings over time. Benchtop meters suit laboratory workflows where electrode flexibility and consistent measurement procedures are priorities.

Consider accuracy, resolution, calibration options and temperature compensation when comparing instruments. Resolution describes the smallest displayed increment and should not be confused with measurement accuracy.

Electrode Selection and Care

The electrode must suit the sample being tested. General-purpose electrodes work well for many aqueous solutions, while specialized designs are available for foods, viscous samples, low-conductivity water and demanding process conditions. Check electrode compatibility and operating limits before selecting a meter.

Regular calibration with fresh pH buffers helps maintain dependable results. Use buffers that bracket the expected sample pH, rinse the electrode between measurements and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and storage instructions. Most glass pH electrodes require an appropriate storage solution and should not be allowed to dry out.

Temperature and Measurement Consistency

Temperature affects both electrode response and the sample’s pH. Automatic temperature compensation adjusts for electrode response but does not generally convert a sample’s pH to its value at another temperature. Allow readings to stabilize and record sample temperature when comparing results across different conditions.
