Understanding Air Quality Measurements

Air quality instruments measure different conditions, so selecting the right equipment starts with identifying the concern. Carbon dioxide (CO₂) readings help assess ventilation in occupied spaces, while particulate measurements track airborne particles such as dust, smoke and fine aerosols. Temperature and relative humidity provide additional context for comfort and moisture conditions.

Particulate Matter and Gas Monitoring

PM2.5 and PM10 refer to particle size categories. Monitoring these particles helps evaluate changes caused by outdoor pollution, indoor activities or filtration performance. Gas monitors measure specific gases, such as carbon monoxide (CO) or carbon dioxide. Instruments that measure total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) provide a broader indication of certain airborne chemicals without identifying each compound individually.

Spot Checks and Continuous Monitoring

Portable meters are useful for checking multiple rooms, investigating complaints and comparing conditions before and after ventilation adjustments. Continuous monitors help reveal trends throughout the day, including changes associated with occupancy, cleaning, cooking or equipment operation. Data logging supports longer-term evaluation and documentation.

Placement and Instrument Selection

Place monitors where readings represent the area being evaluated. Avoid direct airflow from vents, open windows or nearby emission sources unless those locations are the focus of the assessment. Consider the measured parameters, sensor range, accuracy, response time, calibration requirements and data recording capabilities when selecting an instrument.
